History

Founded in 1861

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Jefferson County was created on November 1, 1861, by Colorado Territory from non-county area. Starting in 1907, the county lost land to Park County, and from 1948 onward, it lost multiple areas to Denver through annexation, including Inspiration Point, Bear Valley, Green Meadows, and other neighborhoods.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
