History
Founded in 1861
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Huerfano County was established by Colorado Territory in 1861 and named after Huerfano Butte. In 1866, the county lost territory to the creation of Las Animas County. In 1868, Huerfano gained land from Costilla and Fremont Counties, exchanged territory with Las Animas County, and lost land to Pueblo County.
