History

Founded in 1861

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally created as Guadaloupe County in 1861, it was renamed Conejos just days later, taking its name from the Conejos River. The county has experienced multiple boundary changes over its history, including losing territory to the creation of Hinsdale, La Plata, Rio Grande, and Archuleta counties, and gaining a small area from Costilla County in 1913.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
