History
Founded in 1861
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Lake County was created by the Colorado Territory from non-county area in 1861 and named after Twin Lakes. The county gained territory from Fremont in 1868 but lost significant areas over the following two decades as several new counties were created from its land, including Hinsdale, La Plata, Gunnison, and Chaffee.
