History
Formed in 1883 from Gunnison County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Montrose County was created from Gunnison County on February 11, 1883. In 1883, the county lost territory to the creation of the extinct Uncompahgre County while gaining land from Gunnison County. In 1913, Montrose exchanged territory with Ouray County when the boundary was adjusted to follow public land survey lines.
