History
Formed in 1874 from Douglas County and Greenwood County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Elbert County was created by Colorado Territory on February 2, 1874, from parts of Douglas and Greenwood counties and the Cheyenne Indian Reserve. The county was named after Samuel Hitt Elbert. Elbert lost territory in 1889 with the creation of Cheyenne County, and again later that year with the creation of Kit Carson and Lincoln counties.
