History

Founded in 1861

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Weld was created by the Colorado Territory from non-county area on November 1, 1861. It was attached to Arapahoe County for judicial purposes in 1865, then fully organized and detached from Arapahoe in 1867. Over time, Weld lost territory to the creation of Washington County in 1887, Logan County in 1887, Morgan County in 1889, and Broomfield County in 2001.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
