Pueblo was created in 1861 from non-county area of the Colorado Territory. In 1864 and 1866, it lost land to Fremont County. In 1868, it gained land from Fremont and Huerfano counties and part of the Cheyenne Indian Reserve. In 1870, it lost land to the creation of Bent County and Greenwood County.
