History

Formed in 1866 from Costilla County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Saguache County was created on December 29, 1866, by the Colorado Territory from Costilla County, though it was not fully organized at first and remained attached to Costilla for judicial purposes. The county was fully organized and detached from Costilla on June 18, 1867, and subsequently gained territory from Lake County in 1872 and exchanged land with Rio Grande County in 1879. In 1893, Saguache County lost territory to the creation of Mineral County.
