History

Formed in 1800 from Allegheny County, Lycoming County and Crawford County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Venango County was named after Indigenous peoples of North America. Created in 1800 from Allegheny and Lycoming, it was initially unorganized and attached to Crawford County until it was fully organized in 1805. Over time, the county lost territory: Clarion County was created from Venango in 1840, and Forest County was formed from Venango in 1866.
