History

Formed in 1752 from Bucks County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Northampton was created on March 11, 1752, from Bucks County and Non-County Area 1. Connecticut asserted a charter claim to northeastern Pennsylvania, and Northampton was overlapped by Litchfield County (Connecticut) in 1774, then by Westmoreland County (Connecticut) in 1776, until Congress ruled in favor of Pennsylvania's claim in 1782. Over the following decades, Northampton lost territory to the creation of Northumberland County (1772), Wayne County (1798), Schuylkill County (1811), Lehigh County (1812), Monroe County (1836), and Carbon County (1843).
