History
Formed in 1800 from Huntingdon County, Lycoming County, Mifflin County and Northumberland County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Centre County was created on February 13, 1800, from Huntingdon, Lycoming, Mifflin, and Northumberland counties, and was named for its position at the center of the state. Over the following decades, Centre County experienced numerous boundary changes: Clearfield and McKean were attached in 1804, then detached in 1815 and 1822; the county gained and lost territory to Lycoming in 1818, 1819, and 1836; gained from Union in 1820; and lost territory to the creation of Clinton County in 1839.
