History

Formed in 1848 from Jefferson County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Forest County was created from Jefferson County on April 11, 1848, but was not fully organized and remained attached to Jefferson. The county was briefly lost back to Jefferson in 1850, then fully organized and detached from Jefferson in 1857. It gained territory from Venango County in 1866 and lost territory to Elk County in 1870.
