History

Formed in 1804 from Huntingdon County, Lycoming County and Centre County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Clearfield County was created on March 26, 1804, from Huntingdon and Lycoming Counties and was initially attached to Centre County. It was fully organized and detached from Centre County on January 29, 1822. The county gained territory from Lycoming in 1823 but lost significant areas to the creation of Elk County (1843, 1868, 1871), to Indiana County (1855), and to Jefferson County (1868).
