History
Founded in 1683
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Orange County was created from non-county area in New York in 1683. It exchanged land with neighboring counties Ulster, Rockland, and Bergen County, New Jersey multiple times between 1701 and 1800. In 1773, Orange County gained territory from Bergen County and Sussex County in New Jersey when King George Iii approved the boundary between New Jersey and New York, ending decades of dispute.
