History

Formed in 1821 from Genesee County and Ontario County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Livingston was created from Genesee and Ontario counties. It was named after Robert R. Livingston. The county gained territory from Steuben County in 1822, from Allegany County in 1846 and again in 1857, and a small area from Ontario County in 1922, while losing land to Monroe County in 1825.
