History

Formed in 1791 from Montgomery County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Herkimer County was named after Nicholas Herkimer. Since its creation, the county has changed shape through multiple boundary adjustments: it lost territory to the creation of Onondaga in 1794, to Montgomery in 1797, to the creation of Chenango and Oneida in 1798, and to Clinton in 1801, while gaining land from Otsego in 1816 and from Montgomery in 1817.
