An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Originally called Tryon County when created from Albany in 1772, it was renamed Montgomery in 1784. Over its early years, the county lost territory to the creation of Ontario, Herkimer, Otsego, Tioga, Clinton, Essex, Saratoga, Washington, Hamilton, and Fulton counties.
