History
Founded in 1683
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
New York County was created from Yorkshire, which had been organized in New York in 1664. In 1691, the county gained the Oyster Islands, now Ellis, Liberty, and Governors Islands. Orange County was attached to New York for administrative and judicial purposes in 1693, but was fully organized and detached by 31 December 1698. The county gained land from Westchester in 1874 and 1895, gained North Brother Island from Queens in 1881, gained Rikers Island from Queens in 1884, and lost territory to the creation of Bronx County in 1912.
