History

Formed in 1798 from Herkimer County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Oneida County was created from Herkimer County on March 15, 1798. Over the following decades, the county lost territory to the creation of Jefferson and Lewis counties in 1805, to the creation of Oswego County in 1816, and to Madison County in 1836. The county was named after the Oneida people.
