History
Founded in 1683
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Dutchess County was created from non-county area in New York in 1683. It was attached to Ulster County for administrative and judicial purposes starting in 1693, then fully organized and detached from Ulster in 1708. The county lost territory to the creation of Albany County in 1717 and Putnam County in 1812, but gained back non-county area in 1788.
