History

Formed in 1808 from Allegany County, Genesee County, Cattaraugus County and Chautauqua County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties were initially unorganized and attached to Niagara County for administrative and judicial purposes. Chautauqua was fully organized and detached in 1811, followed by Cattaraugus in 1817. Niagara County lost territory to the creation of Erie County in 1821 and 1824.
