History
Formed in 1844 from Lafayette Parish
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Vermilion Parish was created from Lafayette Parish on March 25, 1844, and named after the Vermilion River. The parish lost territory in 1870 when Cameron Parish was created from it. In 1954, Vermilion Parish's boundary was extended three marine leagues into the Gulf of Mexico to match the state's gulfward boundary.
