History

Formed in 1808 from Rapides Parish

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Catahoula Parish was created within Rapides Parish on March 23, 1808, with no initial change to county boundaries. Over its history, the parish gained and lost territory through exchanges and transfers with neighboring parishes including Ouachita, Avoyelles, Rapides, and others. Notable boundary changes included the creation of Caldwell Parish from Catahoula in 1838 and the creation of Franklin Parish in 1843.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
