History
Founded in 1811
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
St. Mary Parish was created on April 17, 1811, within Attakapas County from the extinct Attakapas Parish. The parish gained territory from St. Martin in 1813 and later lost land to the creation of Iberia Parish in 1868. In 1954, St. Mary's boundary was extended three marine leagues into the Gulf of Mexico, making the parish boundary coextensive with the state's gulfward boundary.
