Thurston County was created by Oregon Territory on January 12, 1852, from Clark and Lewis counties, and initially included the disputed San Juan Islands claimed by both the United States and Great Britain until 1872. The county became part of Washington Territory on March 2, 1853, and its boundaries changed multiple times through the creation of neighboring counties including Island, Jefferson, King, Pierce, Mason, and Grays Harbor.
