History

Formed in 1854 from Clarke County and Lewis County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Skamania County was created by Washington Territory from Clark and Lewis counties, initially including parts of present Idaho and Montana. The county lost territory over the next decade as other counties were formed, and by 1865 it had been eliminated entirely. In 1867, Congress disapproved the law that had eliminated Skamania, and the county was restored.
