History

Formed in 1854 from King County and Thurston County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally called Sawamish County, it was created by Washington Territory on March 13, 1854, from parts of King and Thurston counties. The county experienced multiple boundary adjustments with neighboring counties including Kitsap, Thurston, Chehalis, and Jefferson throughout the 1850s and 1860s. On January 24, 1864, Sawamish County was renamed Mason County. Mason County continued as a Washington county when Washington was admitted to the Union on November 11, 1889.
