History

Formed in 1850 from Great Salt Lake County and Salt Lake County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally spelled Tuilla, Tooele County was created in 1850 by the state of Deseret but was not fully organized until 1851, when it was detached from Great Salt Lake County. Over the following decades, the county lost territory to the creation of Carson, Humboldt, St. Mary's, Shambip, and Box Elder counties, while later gaining territory from St. Mary's and other counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
