History
Formed in 1856 from Weber County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Box Elder County was created by Utah Territory on January 5, 1856, from Weber County. In 1862, the county gained territory from several extinct and existing counties, including all of Greasewood and Malad, and land from Desert, Tooele, and St. Mary's, while losing territory to Cache and Weber counties and islands in Great Salt Lake. From 1862 to 1866, Box Elder County included territory in present-day Nevada, which was lost when Nevada Territory and then the state of Nevada gained land from Utah Territory. The county became part of the state of Utah on January 4, 1896.
