History

Founded in 1873

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Stanley County became a county in the state of South Dakota on November 2, 1889. The county was fully organized and detached from Hughes on April 23, 1890. Stanley gained territory from multiple sources, including from Jackson, Nowlin, Sterling, and Ziebach between 1893 and 1898, and lost territory to the creation of Haakon in 1914.
