History

Founded in 1862

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Deuel County was established in 1862 in Dakota Territory. On January 8, 1873, Deuel County lost territory to the creation of Grant County and Hamlin County, and also lost land to the Wahpeton and Sisseton Indian Reserve. Deuel became a county in the state of South Dakota on November 2, 1889.
