History

Founded in 1889

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

By March 9, 1889, Meade County was created by Dakota Territory from Lawrence County. On November 2, 1889, Meade became a county in the state of South Dakota. Throughout the 1890s, Meade County gained and lost parcels of land through various boundary adjustments and temporary attachments for tax collection and judicial purposes.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
