History
Formed in 1883 from Cheyenne County, Lugenbeel County, White River County and Pennington County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Jackson County was created by Dakota Territory from Cheyenne, Lugenbeel, and White River counties, but was not fully organized and was attached to Pennington County for judicial and revenue purposes. When South Dakota became a state in 1889, Jackson County became a county in the new state, though it remained attached to Pennington County for tax collection and later to Stanley County for judicial purposes. In 1909, Jackson County was eliminated when all its territory was lost to Lyman, Stanley, Mellette, and Washabaugh counties. Jackson County was re-created on November 3, 1914, from Stanley County with different boundaries, and was fully organized on February 9, 1915.
