History

Formed in 1873 from Gregory County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Lyman County was created on January 8, 1873, from Gregory County and Non-County Area 1 in Dakota Territory. It became a county in the state of South Dakota on November 2, 1889, and was fully organized and detached from Brule County on May 21, 1893. Over the following decades, Lyman County gained and lost territory through various boundary adjustments, including gaining from Gregory, Presho, Tripp, Jackson, and Pratt counties, and losing to Gregory County.
