History

Founded in 1862

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Gregory County was established on January 8, 1873, from Todd County in Dakota Territory, and also included part of Fort Randall Military Reserve, though territory was lost to the creation of Lyman County and Tripp County. On May 23, 1882, Gregory County lost territory to the state of Nebraska when the area between 43 degrees north latitude and the Keya Paha and Niobrara Rivers was transferred. When South Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889, Gregory became a county within it. On September 5, 1898, Gregory County was fully organized after being attached to Charles Mix County for tax and judicial purposes.
