History

Formed in 1861 from Churchill County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Lyon County was created by Nevada Territory from non-county area on November 25, 1861, and was named after Nathaniel Lyon. The county's boundaries changed several times over the following decades, gaining territory from Churchill, Esmeralda, and Mineral counties, and exchanging land with Washoe and Douglas counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
