History

Formed in 1903 from Bernalillo County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Sandoval County was named after Juan de Dios Sandoval Martínez. On May 8, 1905, Sandoval was abolished and immediately re-created on the same day with slightly different boundaries; the net result was that Sandoval lost territory to Rio Arriba and Santa Fe. On March 16, 1949, Sandoval lost territory to the creation of Los Alamos, and a small area between Los Alamos and Santa Fe was separated from the rest of the county, leaving Sandoval in two parts.
