History

Founded in 1778

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Bennington County was created in 1778 as one of the two original counties of Vermont. The county experienced multiple boundary changes over its early decades, losing territory to the creation of Rutland County in 1781 and losing the town of Stratton to Windham County in 1787.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
