History
Founded in 1851
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Lane County was created by Oregon Territory on January 28, 1851, from Benton County and Linn County, and initially included territory in present Oregon, Idaho, and most of present Wyoming north of 42 degrees north latitude and west of the Rocky Mountains. It was named after Joseph Lane. Through a series of boundary adjustments from 1852 to 1854, Lane lost small areas to creation of Douglas County and Wasco County and was eliminated from present Idaho and Wyoming. Lane became an Oregon county when Oregon was admitted to the Union on February 14, 1859.
