History

Founded in 1844

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

The Provisional Legislature of Oregon Territory authorized the creation of Clatsop County on June 22, 1844, presumably from portions of Tuality District (now Washington). The county experienced multiple boundary changes over its history, losing land to Yamhill in 1846 and to Tillamook in 1853, while gaining territory from Columbia County in 1885 and 1931.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
