History

Formed in 1895 from Meagher County, Park County and Yellowstone County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Sweet Grass County was created on March 5, 1895, from Meagher, Park, and Yellowstone counties and is named after Hierochloe odorata. The county lost territory to the creation of Stillwater County in 1913, then exchanged territory with Stillwater in 1915. In 1917, Sweet Grass County lost land to the creation of Wheatland County, and in 1920, additional territory was lost to the creation of Golden Valley County.
