History

Formed in 1914 from Dawson County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Richland County was created by petition and election from Dawson County on May 27, 1914. A boundary dispute with Wibaux County arose in August 1914 and was settled by defining the boundary on February 19, 1915. Richland County lost territory to the creation of McCone County, which took effect on April 1, 1919.
