History

Formed in 1827 from Hancock County, Kennebec County, Lincoln County and Penobscot County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Waldo County was created on July 3, 1827, from Hancock, Kennebec, Lincoln, and Penobscot counties. The county gained and lost small areas over the following decades: it gained from Lincoln in 1836 when the town of Camden expanded, gained North Haven Island and Vinalhaven Island from Hancock in 1838, lost to Lincoln in 1854 when Washington gained from Palermo, lost territory to the creation of Knox County in 1860, and gained from Kennebec in 1873 when Burnham gained from Clinton Gore Plantation.
