History

Formed in 1799 from Lincoln County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Kennebec County was created by Massachusetts on February 20, 1799, from Lincoln County. The county is named after the Kennebec River. When Maine was separated from Massachusetts and admitted to the Union on March 15, 1820, Kennebec became a Maine county.
