History
Formed in 1760 from York County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Cumberland County was created by Massachusetts from York County in 1760 and named after Prince William, Duke of Cumberland. When Maine was separated from Massachusetts and admitted to the Union in 1820, Cumberland became a county in the state of Maine. Over the following decades, the county experienced several small boundary adjustments with neighboring counties York, Oxford, and Kennebec.
