History
Formed in 1839 from Penobscot County and Washington County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Aroostook County was created on May 1, 1839 from Penobscot and Washington counties. The Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842 between Great Britain and the United States settled the U.S.-Canadian boundary, fixing the northern limits of Aroostook County. Over the following decades, Aroostook gained territory from Penobscot, Somerset, and Piscataquis counties, with minor boundary adjustments continuing into the early 1900s.
