History
Formed in 1696 from Calvert County and Charles County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Prince George's County was created on April 23, 1696 from Calvert County and Charles County. In 1748, the county lost land to Charles County and to the creation of Frederick County. When the federal government established the seat of national government in 1791, Prince George's continued county functions in the ceded area, but in 1801 lost that territory to the creation of Washington County when the District of Columbia was formally established. In 1997, the county lost Takoma Park city to Montgomery County.
