History

Formed in 1650 from St. Marys County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Anne Arundel County was created in 1650 centered on the settlement of Providence and was named after Anne Arundell. The county was renamed Providence in 1654 and then Anne Arundel in 1658, and has experienced multiple boundary changes, losing territory to the creation of Calvert County in 1654, Baltimore County in 1660, Howard County in 1851, and Baltimore City in 1918.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
