History

Formed in 1726 from Hartford County and New London County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Windham County was created in 1726 from Hartford and New London, and is named after Wineham. The county's boundaries shifted multiple times, gaining the town of Woodstock in 1749 from a Massachusetts annexation, but losing territory to Tolland County starting in 1785 and losing towns to New London County in 1824 and 1881.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
